QuickTime is a cross-platform multimedia architecture for the Mac OS and Windows Operating systems. It consists of a set of multimedia operating-system extensions (implemented as DLLs in Windows), a comprehensive API, a file format, and a set of user applications such as QuickTime Player, the QuickTime ActiveX control, and the QuickTime browser plug-in. QuickTime is a complete multimedia architecture, not just a media player. It supports creating, producing, and delivering a broad variety of media. QuickTime provides end-to-end support for the entire process: capturing media in real time; synthesizing media pragmatically; importing and exporting existing media; editing and composting; compression, delivery, and user playback. Specific tasks that QuickTime is useful for include: Playing movies and other media, such as Flash or MP3 audio. Nondestructive editing of movies and other media. Importing and exporting images between formats, such as JPEG and PNG. Compressing and decompressing sound and video. Composting, layering, and arranging multiple media elements from different sources. Synchronizing multiple time-dependent media to a single timeline. Capturing and storing sequences from real-time sources, such as audio and video inputs. Creating movies programmatically from synthesized data. Creating sprites that use intelligent, scripted animation. Creating presentations that interact with viewers, remote databases, and application servers. Creating movies that include customized window shapes, “skins,” and controls. Streaming movies in real time over a network or the Internet. Broadcasting real-time streams from live sources such as cameras and microphones. Distributing downloadable media on disc or over a network or the Internet. Getting Wine Wine can be easily installed using apt-get, yum, synaptic, emerge, etc. Getting QuickTime Go to the Apple support site and download QuickTime 7.1.6 for Windows and save the download to your home directory. Configuring Wine (1) The first thing we need to do is run winecfg (wine configuration tool) $ winecfg go to the Graphics tab and set Wine to run in a virtual desktop of 1024x768, save the settings and exit winecfg. ![]() Installing QuickTime $ wine QuickTimeInstaller.exe And the install process should start in a 1024x768 virtual window, just follow the instructions and install QuickTime just as if you normally would on Windows. ![]() ![]() The install should run without any trouble until you get to the next to the last step, this is when your virtual desktop will be painted black. You should however see a next dialog box, just click it or press your enter key and it should proceed to the last step in the install, just press enter again and the install is complete and QuickTime should automatically run for the first time. ![]() The windows is painted black because there is a nasty bug in Wine's ddraw implementation: fixme:ddraw:IDirectDrawImpl_SetCooperativeLevel (0x162078)->((nil),00000008) You might want to go to Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences and select Video Settings and select safe mode (GDI only) this will work around the screen being painted black by QuickTime. ![]() ![]() ![]() Configuring Wine (2) QuickTime can use IE's browser components to render there content guide within the player. ![]() To enable this functionality you will need to use some native Windows dlls, here is a couple ways to retrieve these dlls.
Go to Applications > Add application > and add QuickTimePlayer.exe Apply this change and make sure QuickTimePlaer.exe is highlighted and proceed to Libraries now you will want to add browselc, browseui, mlang, mshtml, ole32, oleaut32, rpcrt4, shdoclc, shdocvw, urlmon, usp10, wininet to the Existing overrides list and set the load order as native. To change the default (native, builtin) order just highlight each dll and select edit. ![]() If you run into sound problems go to the Audio tab and set Hardware Acceleration to Emulation. Running QuickTime The install created a shortcut on my Desktop and also put entries in my start menu under Wine. You can execute the shortcut or run QuickTime from your terminal, I personally prefer the terminal as it lets me see whats taking place. $ cd /home/tom/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/QuickTime $ wine quicktimeplayer.exe ![]() Here is a screenshot of the QuickTime Plug-in running in IE 6 I also installed QuickTime in my .ies4linux directory with the same steps as above. export WINEPREFIX="~/.ies4linux/ie6" and install QuickTime into .ies4linux ![]() Here is a screenshot of the QuickTime Picture Viewer. ![]() You may have noticed the WMP 9 icon on my desktop :D Ive also got Windows Media Player 9 installed and working at this time, WMP 9 install process is planned for my next post. here's a couple screenshots of WMP 9 on Linux. ![]() ![]()
