Wine configuration

This is with a clean configuration directory, with no other applications or games installed.

Linux Distribution: Ubuntu 8.04
Windows version emulated: 2000
Wine version tested: 1.1.14

WineTricks

Now download winetricks if you don't already have it and install the following Windows redistributables.

corefonts
flash
gecko
gdiplus
msls31
msxml3
riched20
riched30
tahoma

MSN Messenger install in Wine

You will need to get the installer from a Windows XP machine or download it from the Internet, dont try to install the online installer wlsetup-custom.exe this installer won't currently work with Wine. What you need is the "Install_{508CE775-4BA4-4748-82DF-FE28DA9F03B0}.msi" from: Program files/Common Files/WindowsLiveInstaller/MsiSources and "Install_{508CE775-4BA4-4748-82DF-FE28DA9F03B0}.msi" should be there if you have Messenger 2008 or 2009 installed on the XP machine. You can also do what I did and google for the offline installer and download it from a host. Just be aware that the installer for 2008 and 2009 are named the same,version 8.5 is version 2008 btw.

OK, once you have the installer install it like this:

$ msiexec /i Install_{508CE775-4BA4-4748-82DF-FE28DA9F03B0}.msi

the install will run in your terminal, once the install has completed run winecfg and select "Add application" then go to ".wine/drive_c/Program Files/Windows Live/Messenger" and select "msnmsgr.exe" then set the windows version for "msnmsgr.exe" to win2000 then click OK.

Now run $ wineboot and if you followed all the directions to a tee MSN Mesenger should start up and then all you need to do is sign in.

This howto is good for versions 2008 and 2009, all the steps are the exact same and both versions work about the same.

Notes

The larger thumbnails for the user and contacts do not show bug 8555, other then this annoyance chat works near perfectly.

Also, I didn't test cam support or online games ect, only chat was tested...

Tom, notice any difference if you install this without installing Internet Explorer. I have
installed it but I have no Internet Explorer and the interface looks slightly screwed up but
workable.

Hello Danny,

Does it look like the screen shots above? This is without IE installed from a
clean .wine prefix. if not can you post a screen shot somewhere and put the link here? and
maybe the output from your terminal :)

Okay, i did everything as closely to what you said as possible. (i even uninstalled then reinstalled
wine so it'd be a clean config.). Anyway, it just doesn't seem to work. i installed the programs
using winetricks (i think, i installed them twice to make sure). Then i tried to install the offline
installer file, it just didn't work (i can past everthing terminal spit back at me if you want). I
still tried to see if i could get it working regardless so i opened up wine config and added the
messenger.exe file and set it to windows 2000. typing wineboot in terminal does nothing, and i tried
opening from Applications> wine> programs> windows live> windows live messenger, it pretends to open
but doesn't (it says "opening windows live messenger" on the taskbar but just disappears and
nothing opens). any help? do you know what i did wrong? i'm sorry the post was so big ,but i really
want to get live working under wine. thx in advance

i eventually got it to install, but i couldn't sign in, kept bringing up some error code every time
i tried. I eventually gave up, and I tried again this morning, but can't seem to get any wine apps
to open up.

I'm trying WLM 2009 latest version, I tried with both vcrun2005 and vcrun2005sp1 and I get the same
error, I was emulating XP, I changed it to win2k and still the same.
I can't install it emulating
win2k because the installer says i need XP or greater.

Multiple msi files are required for the 2009 version, I think it can't be used in wine without more
work.
I get stuck with windows error 80070057 when I try to log in with the 2008 version.

I got it working. Everything but nudge. Images loaded last time I tried but it seems to take a while
I think. I can't hear when I nudge anyone or they nudge me.

I did this on Ubuntu 8.10. Latest
build of wine 1.1.17. It wouldn't work running wineboot at first. I rebooted linux and now
everything is working. Hope this helps someone. If anyone has any info on nudge lemme know.

but seeing how yours worked with 1.1.17 I downgraded to it.

it's pointless. I've tried several times, with different wine versions.

now, with the latest version of wine. It won't work. I've had enough stress. Is there an automated
way to do this?

I got the install working and everything "looks" fine, but when i try to log in it fails
repeatedly. When I run the TCP test in WLM it passes fine, but it never connects. I see a poster
ahead of me that reports the same basic thing, so I know its not just me.

Hello again, sorry for the duplicated reply.
I find an issue to type my e-mail and password in the
Sing windows. but now i find the reason why wasn't able to autenticate.

1. You have to install the
package "cabextract"
sudo apt-get install cabextract

Doing this i will be able to install
using winetricks the package "riched20" and "riched30".

Doing those steps now i'm
able to use Windows Live Messenger 2009.

I follwed this to a T. Searched for the .msi file by copying/pasting it into google, so no room for
typos. A few ppl have it on skydrive/filesharing sites. Woot.

It does take AGES to login and
reacts a little slowly to any action. winks sorta work, but I hate em anyway. Avatar display pics
don't work (just a white square) but that's not a biggie. File transfers work. Sometimes the
received/sent message window stops autoscrolling which is a pain... tbh I'm used to using AMSN on
ubuntu and it works well, but it's nice to just have this working too. Restores my faith in Wine.
And is another thing to rub the noses of diehard windows fans in ;)

Yea it works, but actually if you go to wine bug db and look up bug 421 the (dib
engine) and apply the hacked version that's there WLM works pretty well in Wine. Most of the
problems with WLM are related to the missing dib engine, maybe one day soon WLM and some other apps
and games will run as expected. :)

reason for taking the trouble to install it in the first place), it shows an error message (asking
me whether I would like to report the error - ths usual MS error message that says the application

I have tried time and time again besides getting an error when trying to install flash about not
being the same size as the and rename it :

Well with the latest update of wine for ubuntu via repos the MSI install problem got resolved. i
updated what ever ubuntu told me to update i saw wine in there and out of curiosity decided to give
it a go and presto it did it. so if you had the problem make sure u hit update on ubuntu if it
didn't already prompt you to and then run the msi install as instructions above say in terminal.

I
still have the flash issue and it seems to be that the checksum is old or wasn't updated in the
script since it doesn't match. can this be confirmed? and if it can, can someone please tell me how
to get the correct one? i'll edit the script myself since i found the code line where it
goes.

Please Tom can you look in to this?

by the way got it installed but i just see a white page
where the msngr skin should be. so i'm guessing it's the flash issue.

You can edit winetricks, just go to .winetrickscache and run sha1sum on the flash installer and
replace the old value with the correct sha1sum.

It should then install :)

I tried to implement this procedure on MACOSX but so far have been failing in one way or
other, first there are several ways to install wine on MAC, i initially opted for the
MACPORTS procedure and everything went fine until the msiexec command which gave the error as mentioned above by someone:

was well documented and since im not a natural command line guy i need instructions. could
someone tell me what to do from here on? or what i can do to make the MACPORTS procedure
work.

Hey Sahm,

I'm having issue too with WLM 2009 on Mac OS X... anywaze I noticed you might have made
a mistake I've made when I first installed Wine with MACports.

The first time I installed Wine I
used the command:
sudo port install wine

but doing this will install the latest stable version
of wine which is 1.0.1.

I had to uninstall it and use this command:
sudo port install
wine-devel

Which installed Wine v1.1.26.
This is why I think you couldn't update Wine because
MACports was trying to look for another stable version of Wine and there isn't one because they are
still working on the development side of Wine.

So try that and install winetricks and follow the
rest of the guide. You should at least be able to install WLM2009.
